  • What kinds of problems can you help with?

Almost anything! Your problems don't have to be about uni. They don't even have to be problems - you might just have a question about uni rules. Some of the issues we deal with include:

    • Stress, depression and anxiety
    • Family issues
    • Relationship issues
    • Sexuality
    • Drug and alcohol use
    • Self esteem
    • Grief and loss
    • Problems with eating and body image
    • Trauma, abuse and violence
    • Self harm
    • Homesickness and adjustment to uni life
    • Finding or dealing with friends
    • Finances, including emergency loans
    • Course and career issues
    • Uni rules and procedures
    • Problems with colleagues or supervisors
    • Study techniques
    • Motivational issues
    • Procrastination

  • How much does it cost?

    It's free!

  • Will anyone else know about it?

Only if you want them to. All counselling is confidential unless:

    • You direct your counsellor to release information to specified others, or
    • Your counsellor determines that you are a danger to yourself and/or others, or
    • Your counsellor is ordered by a court to disclose information.

  • Will my attendance at Counselling Services show up on my academic record?

    No.

  • Is there a limit to how many times I can attend Counselling Services?

The number of sessions will be worked out between you and your counsellor. Usually counselling is short-term (up to six sessions), so sometimes clients may be referred to appropriate practitioners off-campus if long-term or specialised services are required.

  • Who can use the service? Can partners or family members use it too?

Counselling is available to all students of QUT. If you have issues that involve your partner or someone else in your family, it is sometimes appropriate to involve that person in joint counselling. This is something that you would work out with your counsellor. If you want to bring along a friend or relative for moral support or so that we can explain something to them, this is generally okay. We do not provide individual services to non-QUT persons; however, we can suggest external sources of help if you're concerned about someone.

  • Can QUT staff members attend the Counselling Service?

The primary role of this service is to provide counselling for students, and the primary source of counselling for staff is the Employee Assistance Scheme. However QUT Counselling Services will assist staff members in emergency situations, and provide staff with information, self-help material, and advice about other sources of assistance. Except in emergencies, QUT staff will be limited to one session per year at Counselling Services.
