New books

The cost of new textbooks varies depending on the course you are enrolled in. All campuses have extensive libraries that can be used for supplementary reading. Lists of textbooks are available, but these often change every semester. It is not essential that you purchase all of the books on your booklist. It is often prudent to wait until the first lecture to find out which of the books are essential and which are optional.

Textbook schemes

Some faculties have introduced schemes whereby students in financial difficulty can borrow textbooks for a semester. Ask at your faculty's Low Income Contact Officer if such a scheme is available for you or talk to a counsellor about this option. Contact details for Low Income Contact Officers are located at www.equity.qut.edu.au/programs/forstudents/financial/contacts.jsp.

Second-hand books

To save money on the cost of books you may be able to purchase second-hand books. You can buy second-hand books from past students. Usually there are flyers on bulletin boards with second-hand book offers. Make sure that the text for sale is the correct edition for your requirements.

The Student Guild also operates a second-hand bookshop as a service to both buyers and sellers.
